If I’m going on a doodle walk, I often create a grid of nine squares and then I stop every ten minutes or so for a quick doodle. Why not give it a go? Next time you go on a walk, make it a doodle walk and complete as many little landscape sketches as you can en route. At each doodle stop, look carefully, with or without using a joy-finder, for a small area to sketch and see if you can read the landscape, as discussed earlier, and complete a simple little sketch.

How to add depth

The more small landscape sketches you complete, the more your confidence will grow but don’t expect all your sketches to work. It’s normal to make mistakes and I guarantee your landscape sketches won’t always look like the view in front of you. I often get the angle of a hill a bit wrong, or misjudge the position of a tree. Remember your sketch doesn’t have to look good. All that matters is that you’ve been outdoors in the fresh air, relaxing and intentionally savouring your surroundings.

That said, there are a few tricks that can improve any landscape sketch. Whenever you look at a view, it stretches away from you into the distance and towards the horizon. It’s this sense of depth and perspective that you need to try and capture on paper. There’s no need to worry about learning the formal rules of perspective; all you need to do is look carefully and pay attention to the patterns listed below that, once observed, you can then use to create depth in any sketch.

  Objects in the foreground overlap those behind them

  Objects get smaller in the distance

  Round shapes, like lakes or clouds, get flatter towards the horizon

  Detail is sharper and more visible in the foreground and reduces with distance

  Colours become paler and bluer towards the horizon
